The perfect gift? Ah! A question with perhaps an endless amount of answers.  Yet, there are times where an answer seems to remain ever elusive. Let's start with the basics, gather our information, and formulate our best idea.

First off, what is a gift? An old Funk & Wagnall's gives a legal description of a gift as "A voluntary transfer or conveyance of property, made without consideration." Simple, and without much feeling. Webster's gives some heart to it by adding, "... as to honor a person or an occasion, or to provide assistance; present."

Where did gift giving come from? I believe it's safe to say that most of us have been schooled, or have at least heard, about ancient myths and beliefs involving sacrifices and offerings of fruits to the deities.  I once read about a week long festival called Saturnalia that the Ancient Romans carried on each year during Winter Solstice. They celebrated Saturn and the return of the Sun, and gave gifts such as fruits and nuts, wax candles, pottery figures, and small items for children like dolls made of dough. From there we go on to the Roman Empire falling under Christian rule, the birth of Jesus, and the gifts bestowed upon Him by the Three Wise Men. Seemingly, Saturnalia transformed into Christmas; society began celebrating each newborn birth, and eventually each year on the day of our birth. Our own birth-day celebration!  And why not?! Naturally, there is every reason to celebrate the magic of life! From our first breath to our first steps; from our graduations to our promotions; from our weddings to our anniversaries, there are numerous occasions and accomplishments worthy of celebrating us!

Okay, what have we gathered so far? We know what a gift is. We know where and when gifting began, and we know why we give gifts. We also know how we gift -- by honoring or providing assistance, just like Webster says. Simple. Still, fully armed with our knowledge of what, where, when, why and how, we are left querying what makes a perfect gift. When my daughter was much littler I asked her to give me her definition of gift. She said, "Gifts make people happy." Going further, I asked then of a perfect gift. She answered with, "It's perfect when it's all about me or if it's just something that I just really want, and it makes the people happy to give it to me." Sounds like a win-win; which makes a pretty perfect balance.

Finally, what is all about us and honors us? Go back with me for a minute. Think about growing up writing our names. Remember the scribbles on our walls, notebooks, backpacks, clothes and shoes. Our names, our loved ones' names, written in different colors, different styles, different sizes. Graffitied on buildings and trains, carved in trees, and even tattooed on our bodies. Alas! We may not have all the answers, but we can offer you a great place to start... AMindfulGift.com!
